And the Lord came to Dr. Daniel Low and told him: "Praise the iPhone, for it can make your calls, get your mail, play your music, browse the Web, and now help kids go to surgery without having to use sedatives to calm them down!" And the Lord—who looked remarkably like this guy— gave him one, and then he took it to the kids at the Seattle Children's Hospital, where he raised it up on high, saying: "first, shalt thou watch the videos. Then shalt thou calm the hell down, no more, no less." And the children calmed down, and he saw it was good. So good, in fact, that he has used it for six months in 450 children, reducing the use of drugs by 85%. But how does it work?

Getting children to the operation room is extremely scary for them (and us too,) so usually they have to be sedated to calm them down. Dr. Low observed that watching some videos on the iPhone his kids got completely disconnected from the outside world. He thought that this effect could help children in the hospital get distracted—specially when they leave the room in where they wait with their parents—so he gave it a try.

It worked. And for six months, he has been using this method in 450 children, reducing the use of sedatives in 85%. The benefit is not only make the children a little bit less nervous: without sedatives, kids wake up smoother and are less drowsy after the operation, so they can get back home more quickly.

Of course, this can be done with any video playing device, but Dr. Low seems to believe that the iPhone is perfect for the job, arguing that they don't interfere with the equipment and can be easily sanitized. We are sure that the same can be said about other personal media players, but whatever helps kids is fine for us. [King5]

Now that AT&T has full control of wireless hotspots like Starbucks and Barnes and Nobles, it looks like they're doling out freebies to their favorite customers: iPhone users. Apparently, if you've got one of Apple's devices, you can hop on the WiFi networks for exactly zero dollars provided you enter your phone number at a login screen. Great for iPhone owners, but a raw deal for everyone else, right? Not so fast, apparently a dumb hack gets you the service on the house too -- just switch your browser's user agent to Mobile Safari, and presto! Free internet. We can't imagine this is a hole that won't get plugged real fast, so get it while the gettin's good.

Sometimes it's annoying to have to use Mail on my iPhone to review a PDF, Word or Excel file I received a couple of days before. I wanted to have permanent access to some of my inportant files (roadmaps, notes, lists etc.) even when I can't go online. All you need is a jailbroken 1.1.3 (or newer) iPhone, an FTP client on your Mac, and the "Safari 1.1.3 Patch" for your iPhone (see the Big Boss' repository: "Adds file:// support for local files viewing to Safari.")

For PDF: Use your FTP client to create a new folder on your iPhone in /var/mobile/Media/. Name it PDF and drag your PDF files into it. Some of them have to be renamed to meet the usual URL naming conventions. This means: no spaces, no umlauts, etc. I dragged a file named regex.pdf in there. Now I only have to type in the following URL in Safari on the iPhone:
file:///var/mobile/Media/PDF/regex.pdf
Safari can display PDF, Word, Excel, and any HTML file you put in the Media folder (...

iLounge has the scoop about a leaked iPhone template rumored to have been sent to iPhone "launch partners." According to iLounge, the screen size would be 3.5" (inches) instead of a speculated 2.8". It's no doubt that an iPhone redesign (or at least update) looms in the not-so-distant future, but is this template what we'll be seeing?

According to the template, the (new?) iPhone has a slightly different taper and appears to come in different colors, namely white, black, and (possibly) red. iLounge also posted an image of the template for your viewing pleasure.
