We were talking today in Campfire—Giz's virtual office—about Apple's newly-uncovered patent on a system that warns you about bad quality or dropping cellular or Wi-Fi connections "ahead of time." Jason thought it could be useful to know that, so you just avoid making the call. I thought that it won't be useful at all, because if I needed to call, I would call anyway—and if the connection drops, I would call again. Are we missing something? Do you really want to know the quality of a call beforehand, specially if you are travelling, and said quality is constantly changing as you move? And don't cellphones already warning about dropping calls?

The moment the quality starts going to hell, you know it may drop, so I imagined that if my telephone warned me about it, not only I wouldn't find it useful—as I already knew about it—but I would think it would be totally annoying. Like:

iPhone: "Warning: your call may be about to drop."
Me: "No fracking kidding!"

What do you think?

We've already seen a demo of Quake 3 Arena running NETWORKED on two iPhones with accelerometers, but news is some more similar games are coming this way. First, there's Re-Volt, made by some Canadian developer, that'll have Quake-ish graphics and feature tilt and touch controls as well. Then, even better, there will be BioShock. Yes, that BioShock. The one with the fantastic mood and storytelling. Who knows how bastardized the iPhone version will be, but we want it. [Pocket Gamer (BioShock) and Pocket Gamer (Re-Volt)]

As always, Apple is busy at the patent office this week, with two recently uncovered filings to make life just a little bit easier for Mr. Joe Person Man. The first of these is a system to track how far away you are from a cell tower, and to warn you via your phone when you're about to drop your call -- with similar applications for GPS and WiFi devices. The other patent is a Bluetooth-based system to track down lost objects like keys or your Bluetooth headset via the age old method of "you're getting hotter" and you're getting colder." Sure, Apple's version might have a fancy readout on the phone display, but it's the same basic principle -- no triangulation going on here. Of course, Apple patents all sorts of crazy stuff that never makes it to market, but at least these two have a semblance of possibility.

[Thanks, Mark]

Fujitsu's upgrading their already awesome F703i waterproof phone to add a 2.7-inch screen, HSDPA, 2-megapixel camera and underwater TV action. Honestly, now that Fujitsu's pushed the bar for cellphones into the underwater TV realm, we're not satisfied with any phone that doesn't have this. 3G iPhone? Does it have underwater TV? Then good day to you, sir.

The girl's actually holding the F703i, not the F706i, which inconveniently doesn't have a photo of her in a tub demonstrating how it works. Use your imagination please.

TUAW was lucky enough to spend a little time recently chatting with Anders Nilsson of Polarbit.com. Polarbit is an independent game developer based in Europe. They recently ported their mobile Raging Thunder racing game to the iPhone and released it as a free beta to the jailbreak community. (It's hosted at the Big Boss repository.) Built around the iPhone's accelerometer, Raging Thunder really expresses the fun, interactive potential of the iPhone as a gaming platform.

Read on past the jump for the full transcript of our interview.
